two days – two classic rivers – four awesome races

The ESK PADDLE FEST 2018 is being held on the 15th and 16th of September. Day one will be on the North Esk River. Day two will be on the South Esk River (Cataract Gorge).

Program

Saturday 15th September

Registration – 9:30 to 10:15am

Registration is at Corra Lynn, 9km south-east of the centre of Launceston. Cost is $40 for the full Esk Paddle Fest.

Safety Briefing – 10:30am

Teams Race – 11:30am

Teams Race starts at the pool above Zig-Zag rapid and finishes below Second Drop rapid. The race can be contested in teams of 2 or 3. Starting times will be staggered 1 minute.

Time Trials – 12pm

Time Trials will be run through First Drop and Second Drop rapids. Paddlers will have two opportunities to record their best time.

Mass Start Race – 1:30pm

The Mass Start Race starts at the bottom of Second Drop rapid, and finishes at the Corra Lynn bridge.

BBQ & presentation for North Esk races at Corra Lynn – 2pm

Pub Dinner at Prince of Wales Hotel, Evandale – 6:30pm

Camping and Bonfire at Knox’s paddocks

Camping is available at Knox’s paddocks (58 Logan Road, Evandale – 1.5km from the pub, and last house in the village). You’re welcome to set up camp Friday night or Saturday morning. We’ll be having a bonfire after the pub dinner.

 

Sunday 16th September

Courtesy of Hydro Tasmania, water will be released from Trevallyn Dam on the South Esk River. The valves will be slowly opened from 5:30am, fully open by 6:30am. By 9:00am the water at the bottom of Cataract Gorge will be in full flow.

There are no organised events until the start of the Hydro Tasmania Cataract Gorge Extreme Race, so paddlers may like to paddle a lap or two of the classic Cataract Gorge prior to the race.

Safety briefing – 12:00pm

The safety briefing will at the large pool below First Basin. Registration will not be available here. You must register the previous day at Corra Lynn.

Practice runs & scouting – 12:15pm to 1:00pm

Scout the Slalom rapid from the tourist path on the north side of the gorge and have a practice run.

Hydro Tasmania Cataract Gorge Extreme Race – 1:00pm to 3:00pm

The races will be held on Slalom rapid, starting in the pool below First Basin, and finishing in the tidal zone. Paddlers will race down Class 4 rapids in heats of 4 paddlers. The first 2 paddlers in each heat will progress to the next stage.

BBQ and presentation for Cataract race and overall winner at Launceston Royal Park – 3:30pm
