Paddle ‘n’ Ski Hadspen Race 16 February 2016

The clouds cleared after a grey day to welcome the Hadspen race with a light southerly breeze giving a hard paddle upriver followed by a great sprint back down. Terry was first over the line getting a decent PB of around 70 seconds, Geoff was next, continuing his run of improvement with a 40 second jump. I chased Geoff the entire way and maybe gained 100 metres over the entire race but I got over for a PB of around 20 seconds; Claye was next having held onto my tail from the Main highway bridge just missing out on his PB. A big group holding Michael, Phil Barratt, Tim and Colin came over the line next with plenty of drafting practice happening in the race; Bill followed shortly after. Tony also achieved a PB, but his additional self handicapping had him finishing further down the field. The remainder were a bit off their usual pace.

With three weeks of handicap racing left it is getting tight at the top of the points table with 4 paddlers still a chance to take home the perpetual trophy. Bill is holding the lead with Geoff closing quickly with some good paddles the last few weeks, the ever improving Colin is also coming fast. With Phil Nelson an outside chance about 95 points behind still able to win from his own paddling. Phil Barratt, April and Claye remain mathematical possibilities but will have to rely on those ahead faltering, not a strong position to put yourself in.
